今年の初夏、ジャズ・ヴォーカリストのakikoちゃんがDJの大貫憲章さんが主催する伝説のクラブ・イベント、”LONDON NITEのトリュビュート・アルバムをリリースした。
いつもジャズを歌っている彼女だけに最初は少し驚いたものの、ロンドンナイト卒業生であることは既知の事実だったので、ストレートなアイデアとその楽曲への思い入れにはアルバムを聴き終わった後、大いに納得させられた。それよりも、そのアルバムの中で”99 Red Balloons” (Nena),”Perfect” (Fairground Attraction), “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” (Culture Club)という80年代を代表するポップ・ミュージックのカバー3曲をプロデュースしたのがTheSkaFlamesの大川毅くんだったことの方が僕にとっては驚きだった。

彼とは僕がクラブ・キングというプロダクション・カンパニーにいた時に主催するイベントにライブ・ゲストとして出演してもらって以来のおつき合いなのだが、西麻布のピカソで毎日のように遊んでいた頃（働いていたのか、ただ単にカウンターの中にいたのか？）から僕がU.F.O.というDJグループに所属していた頃にプレイするクラブに遊びに来てくれていて、よくお喋りもしていたのだが、意外にもあまり音楽の話しはしていなかったように思う。僕よりも他のメンバーと仲が良かったのと、ミュージシャンとして尊敬していたので、無意識に少し距離を作っていたのかもしれない。とにかく付かず離れずの20年だった。

その長い時を吹き飛ばしてくれたのがその楽曲のアレンジ。特に”99 Red Balloons”の絶妙のラテン系アプローチは見事だった。19世紀にキューバで始まったと言われるソンから40年代後半にスペイン東北部から南フランスで生まれたルンバ・フラメンコ、コロンビア産のクンビアまで同時に取り込んでしまうその音楽センスの高さ。思わず身震いしてしまったほどだ。ジャパニーズ・スカのオリジネイターとして時代と人とを繋ぎ合わせる一方で他の音楽ジャンルにまで突っ込んで探究していたとは、ホント御見逸れしました。
それからどうしてもその事を伝えたくなって数日後、遂には彼の携帯電話に直接連絡していかに自分が感動したかを延々と語っていた。大川くんもその想いにきちんと応えてくれた。それからメールや電話でのやりとりがはじまり、最近のお気に入りの音楽をCDにして新宿のドイツパブで酒を酌み交わしながら音楽談義に花を咲かせることもあった。
と文章にしてみるとかなり怪しい関係に思われそうだが、残念ながらお互いにそのケはない。

生のグルーブやアナログ録音に拘り、古き良き音楽を掘り起こしながらも今の時代に新しい（新鮮）ものとして表現する者、片や世界中で日々進化していく音楽をジャンルレスに吸収して自分なりに紹介していく者。一見背反しているように見えて実は同様の想いを抱きながら同じ時代を生きて来たという事実が何よりも嬉しかった。

そんな大川くんが中心となって毎年制作され、発表されるこのシリーズも今回で早くも３作を数える。参加メンバーについてはこのCDを手にしている皆さんの方がよくご存知だと思うので、あえてここでは割愛させてもらう。曲のコメントもこの熱い魂を一発録りプロジェクトに合わせて自分も直感的に書いてみることにする。音楽を聴いて浮かんできた情景や言葉をとにかく書き綴ってみる。全国各地からSUNSHOTそしてDown Beat Rulerの名の下に集まった個性派アーティストの作品集なので内容が悪い訳がない。まさに21世紀のニッポン・ストリート発ワールド・ミュージック大全集と言えるだろう。
最後にいちリスナーとして誰よりも先にこのアルバムを聴くことが出来た事に感謝しつつ、参加した全てのクルーにエールを送りたい。

Earlier this summer, Jazz Vocalist Akiko released atribute album to “London Nite” a legendary event by DJ Kensho Onuki.

First I was surprised because I only new the Jazz side of Akiko but also I knew that she used to go to that party so her straight forwarded ideas and passion to the tracks were convincing.
More than that I was surprised to hear Takeshi Okawa’s cover of 80’s pop tunes “99 Red Balloons” (Nena),”Perfect” (Fairground Attraction), and “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” (Culture Club).

He and I go way back, when I was working at a production company called Club King. I asked him to be one of the live guest to the party I used to host at Club Picasso in Nishiazabu ( I don’t know if he was working or he was just a guy in the bar). He also started to come to the party when I was in a DJ group called U.F.O. and we did talked and communicated but I don’t know if we
really talked about music.
He used to hang out with other members and also I respected him as musician, I might have been not too close of him for about 20years.

The long time was blown away by the arranging of his tunes. Especially the latin feel approach to “99 Red Balloons”is amazing.
He took in and combined the essence from Son which is told to be started in 19th century Cuba, and Rumba Flamenco which was born in the late 40’s the north-eastern Spain to southern France
and Cumbia from Colombia.
This Japanese Ska originator has been tying up time and people and also other musical genres. I was amazed by his work and few days after I couldn’t resist calling him and tell him how I felt.

Of course Okawa responded to my call. Since then we started communicate often,talked by e-mail and phone and recently we exchanged a CD of what we like these days and talked about music and drank in a German pub in Shinjuku. (Sounds like a strange relationship but we’re both straight)

A guy who is introducing new and fresh sounds to new generation by digging old music, being particular about raw grooves and analog recordings.
And also a guy who absorbs music from all over the world and introduces it in his own way.
It seemed that both people were going in the different direction but it wasn’t.
They both had a same feeling to the time which they experienced.

This project by Okawa is made every year and this will be the 3rd one. The other artists who joined are already known to you who picked up this CD so I rather not comment on them here.
This comment is also written by the project concept “recording the soul by one chance”.

I just tried to write what I felt by hearing the tracks.
I couldn’t be bad since all the musicians are an individual SUNSHOT and Down Beat Ruler.
I say this is the world music-pedia of 21st century, born in Japan.
Lastly I would like say thank you to hear this album and shout out to all the people who joined this project.
